Cue the Experts S3 Ep 08 - Jørgen Sandman: Why Pool Still Isn’t a Sport in America

Jørgen Sandman hadn't finished university when his hometown billiard club in Sundsvall, Sweden, hired him as its full-time administrator. In 1979 he borrowed an idea from ice hockey to build a 10-skill test for pool players, the seed of what became the PAT. He went on to co-found the World Pool Billiard Association in 1987, and in February 1998 opened a letter covered in Japanese stamps announcing the IOC had recognized cue sports. We discuss why talent really equals interest, why he tells players struggling with the mental game to fix their technique first, the time Mike Massey pulled him from the commentary booth to prove a snooker legend wrong, the 9-ball rule he fought and lost, and why America still treats pool as a hobby.
